Neutering of owned dogs

Since January 2020, Zero Stray Pawject in collaboration with the mayors office and locals vets were able to convince over 190* owners who never wanted to/ were able to spay/ neuter, to ensure that their dogs will never produce unwanted litters. Zero Stray Pawject started to subsidize neutering surgeries of owned dogs on the island of Aegina, and, in parallel, run targeted campaigns for owners who object to neutering their dogs. As of October 2020, 190* owned dogs were neutered and hundreds of unborn puppies saved. Owners paid 15€/ males, 20€/ females (vs. 80-260€ usual neutering costs).

Kiera and Bruno are two of the dogs who, despite of the best efforts of their family, had produced unwanted puppies in the past. When Kiera was in heat, they kept Bruno and Kiera separate from each other to stop any potential mating. However, despite of their best efforts, Kiera had jumped the fence in the past and surprised her family with 8 puppies. In a society where there is an overpopulation of dogs and a large amount of stray dogs, it is very hard to find good homes for all these puppies. Keep reading how this program helped their family.

The promotion of neutering of owned dogs as a means to control dog overpopulation is a key part of larger integrated program that has as an end-objective to make Aegina, Greece a sustainably “zero stray” dog community.

With the support of our partner vets in Aegina, Neutering has continued during the COVID crisis, albeit at a slower pace due to the need to follow protection protocols and comply with government restrictions on movement during the lock down weeks.

This program is sponsored by Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, one of the largest animal welfare organizations in the world and the Bodossaki Foundation, one of the most well-known Greek charities. Read for the official announcement about Battersea here and for Bodossaki here.

We are proud that both, Battersea Dogs and Cats Home and the Bodossaki Foundation chose us to partner with to achieve zero stray dogs in Aegina and ultimately in Greece, as they believe in the difference our program makes.
